According to Reuters, Viasat Inc, a United States satellite communications company said on Monday it was investigating a possible cyberattack that disrupted its residential internet services in Ukraine and other European nations.
Viasat said a third-party cybersecurity firm was investigating the cause of an outage in recent days on its KA-SAT network, which delivers high-speed satellite internet service throughout Europe and the Mediterranean markets.
According to Sky News (https://news.sky.com/story/satellite-giant-viasat-probes-suspected-broadband-cyberattack-amid-russia-fears-12554004), the disruption could have been caused by a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. Shortly before Russia’s incursion last week, such cyberattacks targeted a number of Ukrainian banks and government websites.
Viasat said in a statement “Our investigation into the outage continues, but so far we believe it was caused by a cyber event,”, adding that it was not immediately clear if customer data was involved.
Of late, President Vladimir Putin’s government accused the Western nations of fabricating cyber-warfare allegations in order to tarnish Russia’s reputation.
