Vaccine Registration Portal CoWIN Not Hacked & Data of 15 Crore Indians Safe

by CISOCONNECT Bureau

Following reports that India’s vaccine registration portal CoWIN had been hacked and its database of 15 crore people was for sale, Indian cyber security researchers claimed that the website behind it was fake and was a Bitcoin scam.

In a tweet, a hacking group known as “Dark Leak Market” claimed to have the database of roughly 15 crore Indians who registered on the CoWIN portal and are selling it for $800 because they are not the “original leakers” of the data.

The hacking group’s website is bogus, according to independent cyber security researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia, and they are running a Bitcoin scam.

Last month, the government added a new feature to the CoWIN application of “four digit security code” to reduce errors and inconvenience to citizens while scheduling vaccination appointments online.
