Indonesia is Investigating the Possibility of Data Breach on the Covid-19 App

Anas Ma’ruf, a official overseeing data in the health ministry, said the government was looking into the potential breach, but revealed that the potential flaw was in an older version of the app that hadn’t been used since July.

A health ministry official said on Tuesday that Indonesia is examining a probable security flaw in a Covid-19 test-and-trace app that exposed personal information and the health status of 1.3 million people.

Personal information in the Indonesia Health Alert Card (eHAC) app, which is frequently required to be used by travellers, was accessible “due to the lack of protocols put in place by the app’s developers.”, according to researchers from encryption service vpnMentor.

Anas Ma’ruf, a official overseeing data in the health ministry, said the government was looking into the potential breach, but revealed that the potential flaw was in an older version of the app that hadn’t been used since July.

“The eHAC from the old version is different from the eHAC system that is a part of the new app,” he said. “Right now, we’re investigating this suspected breach”.

The eHAC system is now included in the Peduli Lindungi (Care Protect) app, which the government has marketed for for various tracing purposes, including entry at malls.

Anas advised people to delete the old app and disclosed that the breach could have originated from a partner, but did not elaborate. He said that the existing eHAC system was now under government control and that its safety was “guaranteed”

According to VpnMentor researchers, the security vulnerability might expose people to phishing or hacking, as well as deter people from using the Covid-19 tracking app.
