BlackBerry to Look Beyond Conventional Endpoint Security Offerings

by CISOCONNECT Bureau

BlackBerry is continuing to extend its security offerings beyond conventional endpoint security. BlackBerry CEO John Chen is moving the company into the automotive tech and Internet of Things (IoT) security markets. Chen expects that the realms of enterprise security and embedded security will finally collide.

BlackBerry is also promoting endpoint protection applications to MSPs and MSSPs. However, during BlackBerry’s quarterly earnings call with financial analysts on March 30, 2021, Chen listed additional market opportunities.

Commenting on the development, CEO Chen said “Our ongoing strategy is to safeguard the Internet of Things with intelligent security. We achieved this by combining our 30 years plus of expertise, security expertise with newly acquired technologies such as AI and machine learning.”

Chen added that BlackBerry addresses the IoT security opportunity in two ways. The first is to provide cybersecurity to companies, particularly those in large, highly regulated industries like government, finance, and healthcare. BlackBerry’s Zero Trust Architecture protects endpoints, networks, and communications in those verticals. The second step is to embed technology that ensures the endpoint’s safety and security. BlackBerry’s current focus is primarily on the automotive industry.

Cybersecurity Developments
Looking ahead, Chen stated that BlackBerry will improve its XDR (eXtended Detection and Response) strategy by releasing Optics 3.0, a cloud-based EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) product, sometime this quarter. A BlackBerry gateway product will also be the first to provide ZeroTrust Network Access to both SaaS and on-premises applications, according to Chen.
