Amazon Slammed with a Record EU Data Privacy Fine

by CISOCONNECT Bureau

As privacy regulators become more rigorous in their enforcement, Amazon.com Inc has been fined with a record $886.6 million (746 million euros) for processing personal data in violation of the bloc’s GDPR laws.

The fine was issued on Amazon by the Luxembourg National Commission for Data Protection (CNPD) in a July 16 ruling, according to Amazon’s regulatory filing on Friday.

According to a company spokeswoman, Amazon will appeal the fine. Amazon said in the filing that CNPD’s decision was without merit.

Companies must obtain people’s consent before using their personal data or face stiff fines under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR.
