Europol, the European police coordinating agency, announced on Wednesday that domains and servers of “DoubleVPN,” a network used by criminals to mask their identities during cyber attacks, had been confiscated by police in Europe, the United States, and Canada.
On Wednesday, the company’s website displayed a notice from law enforcement officials stating that the domain, as well as information held by DoubleVPN on its clients, had been seized.
Customers paid $25 for access to a VPN, or virtual private network, that allowed hackers to hide their real identity and location while breaking into networks around the world, according to Europol.
Europol said “DoubleVPN was heavily advertised on both Russian- and English-speaking underground cybercrime forums as a means to mask the location and identities of ransomware operators and phishing fraudsters,”
