McDonald’s revelation about “recent unauthorized activity on our network” comes amid a worldwide wave of cyberattacks targeting everything from meatpacking plants to pipelines to public utilities, with some victims forced to pay ransoms to hackers.

On Friday, McDonald disclosed that hackers broke into its servers and accessed data of customers in Taiwan and South Korea.

McDonald’s revelation about “recent unauthorized activity on our network” comes amid a worldwide wave of cyberattacks targeting everything from meatpacking plants to pipelines to public utilities, with some victims forced to pay ransoms to hackers.

McDonald’s said in a statement “While we were able to close off access quickly after identification, our investigation has determined that a small number of files were accessed, some of which contained personal data,”

According to the McDonald, the files accessed, however, did not contain information about customers’ payments, and operations were not disrupted.

“Based on our investigation, only Korea and Taiwan had customer personal data accessed, and they will be taking steps to notify regulators and customers listed in these files.”

McDonald disclosed that it worked with “experienced third parties” to examine the incident, but it didn’t disclose how big the breach was.
