In H1 2021, there were 12,001 Cybersecurity Incidents involving Govt Organisations

During the years 2020 and 2021 (up to June), a total of 54,314 and 12,001 cybersecurity incidents were related to government organisations, respectively

Parliament was informed on Wednesday that about 12,000 cybersecurity incidents involving government organisations were recorded in the first half of 2021. In a written response to a query in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated that the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) is obliged to identify and monitor cybersecurity incidents in India.

According to minister, CERT-In has observed a total of 11,58,208 and 6,07,220 cybersecurity incidents in 2020 and 2021 (as of June).

He stated that throughout the years 2020 and 2021 (up to June), a total of 54,314 and 12,001 cybersecurity incidents were related to government organisations, respectively.

The minister added that six incidences of financial fraud involving ATMs, cards, Point-of-Sale (PoS) systems, and the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) were reported in 2018, with four cases reported in each of the following years: 2019, 2020, and 2021 (up to June).

The minister emphasised that the government has taken a number of initiatives to improve cybersecurity posture and prevent cyberattacks.

This includes developing a Cyber Crisis Management Plan to combat cyber attacks and cyber terrorism, as well as CERT-In issuing alerts and advisories on a regular basis on the latest cyber threats/vulnerabilities and countermeasures to protect computers and networks.
