The Canadian cybersecurity watchdog Citizen Lab reported that evidence of the hacking has turned into a massive scandal in Poland.

Pegasus infects smartphones, turning them into pocket spying devices that allow the user to read the target’s messages, look at their pictures, monitor their geo locations, and even turn on their camera without their knowing.

Ewa Wrzosek, a prosecutor and opposition figure, also said that the spyware was used against her, and that Apple was the one who initially informed her.

Pegasus sparked controversy in July after a joint investigation by various media sources revealed that governments had used the Pegasus to spy on activists, journalists, lawyers, and politicians.

Following the allegations that the Israeli firm “enabled foreign governments to conduct transnational repression,” US authorities blacklisted NSO last month by prohibiting exports to it from American groups.

On Tuesday, Poland’s opposition leader, Donald Tusk, said recent reports that the government spied on its opponents constituted the country’s biggest “crisis for democracy” since the end of communism.
