The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN) for information and communication technologies, has ranked India 10th in the Global Cyber Security Index (GCI) 2020, which was announced on Tuesday.
India’s ranking of 10th is a significant improvement over the index’s previous edition from 2018, when it was rated 47th. Since the pandemic began, there has been an increase in cyber attacks in India.
The GCI is a reliable indicator of a country’s commitment to cybersecurity on a global scale.
To establish an overall score, India and other countries were assessed on five pillars: legal measures, technical measures, organisational measures, capacity development, and cooperation. A total of 82 questions were asked of the countries, with 20 indicators being measured. The overall score for India was 97.49.
India came in fourth place in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
The index stated “Many countries are making progress in their commitments to responding to cybersecurity challenges, despite opportunistic actors taking advantage of our desire for information, our fears about the pandemic, shift to working from home and remote learning, dependence on healthcare systems,”
“In our post-Covid-19 reality, cyber risk management and resilience matter more than ever,” Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Director, Telecommunication Development Bureau of ITU, stated on announcing the GCI Index.
